- a unique type of honey from New Zealand
Honey has been used since ancient times for its wonderful healing properties, particularly when applied to the skin. Now, scientists have discovered why. It is due to special enzymes in honey that give it amazing antibacterial and antioxidant properties.
More recently, some types of honey gathered from the manuka bush, which grows uncultivated in New Zealand, have been found to have even greater healing abilities for the skin, due to the presence of a unique antibacterial property. Scientists call this the Unique Manuka Factor (UMF), which is not found in all types of manuka honey.
Scientists at New Zealand's Waikato University have documented that honey, when used topically, supports the skin’s own cell renewal process, and assists in the formation of stronger collagen, the protein in skin responsible for its elasticity. In addition, honey contains natural antioxidants that protect against damaging free radicals.
Research has found that New Zealand active manuka honey also has much higher levels of antioxidants than any other type of honey, and stimulates the immune system. It can penetrate deeply into the skin, to nourish and rejuvenate it, making it look younger and softer. Active manuka honey is also effective in healing skin blemishes, including acne and even more serious skin conditions, such as eczema and psoriasis.
